Capitol Police Officer Killed in Attack in U.S. Capitol; New Details Emerge Around Suspect

A vehicle rammed a barricade beyond the United States Capitol Friday, murdering a Capitol Police officer and hammering another.The defendant was captured and killed by authorities after getting out of the vehicle brandishing a knife and began lunging toward the officers, according to Acting U.S. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman.

One of those officers reacted to their injuries, Chief Pittman confirmed at a press briefing after the episode.
“It is with deep sadness that I discuss the news of the passing of Officer William’Billy’ Evans this day from injuries that he continued after an attack at the North Barricade by a lone assailant,” Chief Pittman said in a statement. “Officer Evans had been a member of the United States Capitol Police for 18 years. He began his USCP support on March 7, 2003, and was a part of this Capitol Division’s First Responder’s Unit. Please keep Officer Evans and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Officer Evans is the next member of the Capitol Police to perish in the line of duty this year, after Officer Brian Sicknick was murdered in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Two additional officers that responded to this riot — a Capitol Police officer along with also a D.C. Metropolitan Police Officer — died by suicide.
“This was a very tough time for U.S. Capitol Police,” Chief Pittman explained.
Chief Pittman noted that there is not any sign the defendant was targeting some specific member of Congress. Police do not believe that there is an ongoing threat to this region, and the episode isn’t believed to be more terror-related.
Another officer injured is in stable and non-threatening condition, as stated by the Capitol Police.
The Suspect

Law enforcement officials identified the slain defendant as 25-year-old Noah Green.
The defendant had been suffering from delusions, paranoia, and suicidal thoughts, a U.S. official told The Associated Press on Saturday.
In online posts which have been eliminated, the defendant described being under authorities thought control and stated that he was being viewed. A few of the messages have been captured by the team SITE, which monitors online activity.
“To be truthful recent years have been demanding, and these past couple of months have been tougher,” the defendant wrote in late March. “I have been attempted with some of the greatest, unthinkable tests in my life. I am currently now jobless after I abandoned my job partially because of afflictions, but ultimately, in search of a religious journey.”
Researchers are focused on Green’s mental wellbeing as they operate to recognize any motive for the attack, said the officer, who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation and talked to The AP on condition of anonymity. The officer said investigators had talked to Green’s family, who talked of his delusional thoughts.

Details In the Capitol

The U.S. Capitol complex was put on lockdown after the shooting and staff were told they could not enter or exit buildings. Video showed National Guard troops mobilizing near the region of the crash.
A spokesperson for the National Guard told Spectrum News that they had 2,300 guardsmen on duty at Washington, D.C. as of Friday, down from around 25,000 around inauguration day.
Nearly all fencing put up to Inauguration Day has also been eliminated, allowing automobiles onto neighboring streets. But Friday’s episode also occurred at a road barrier which was used prior to Jan.6, designed to obstruct traffic and acknowledge members of Congress to the Capitol complex.
The National Guard’s spokesperson told Spectrum News that assessing the threat level at the Capitol in recent weeks has been the responsibility of the U.S. Capitol Police in combination with intelligence from the FBI. The National Guard’s role at the Capitol would be to encourage the police force at their request, they stated.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) told CNN that he had been working in his office at the Cannon Building on Friday but had been out picking up lunch when the crash occurred. He had been waiting in his car then for its lockdown to finish.
“It’s really sad since I’d thought once the obstacles were eliminated that we were moving back to some sense of normalcy,” he said. “But this only shows the level of risk which there is, and very sad that this is occurring at the Capitol.”
The episode comes almost three weeks after rioters loyal to then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s election triumph. The rioting resulted in five deaths, including Officer Sicknick.
Authorities set up a tall perimeter fence around the Capitol and also for months limited traffic across the streets closest to the construction, but they have started pulling back a number of the emergency measures lately. There was not any immediate connection apparent between Jan. 6 and Friday’s wreck.

Lawmakers React to the Attack

President Joe Biden issued an announcement from Camp David, stating that he and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden are”heartbroken” by the attack which required Officer Evans’ life and left yet another officer”fighting for his own life .”
“We send our heartfelt condolences to Officer Evans’ household, and everybody grieving his loss,” Biden said. “We all know what a tough time this was for its Capitol, everyone who works there, and people who protect it.”
The president ordered the flags at the White House to be flown half-staff at a presidential proclamation honoring”the support and sacrifice of those victims of this attack at the United States Capitol on Friday, April 2.”
Biden also expressed”that the country’s gratitude to the Capitol Police, the National Guard Immediate Response Force, along with others who immediately responded to this attack.”
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas explained that”there is still much to be determined about this attack” and expressed his condolences for both Officer Evans and his nearest and dearest.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, & colleagues of the Capitol Police Officer who lost his life today protecting the symbol of our democracy,” Mayorkas said.
Additional White House officials, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, additionally expressed sympathies for Officer Evans.
“Our hearts break for your U.S. Capitol Police officer that had been murdered, and we are holding in our selves the officer injured at the U.S. Capitol,” Buttigieg wrote on Twitter. “I am deeply thankful for the support of those women and men who keep our authorities and public servants safe.”
Attorney General Merrick Garland was briefed about the episode and is actively monitoring the situation, according to a spokesperson.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle expressed their prayers to the Capitol Police officers injured.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered the flags at the Capitol to be flown at half-staff in honor of Officer Evans, according to a spokesman.
In an announcement, Pelosi known as Officer Evans”a martyr to our democracy.”
“Members of Congress, staff and Capitol workers, and indeed all Americans are united in appreciation for the guts of this U.S. Capitol Police,” Pelosi said. “Now, once more, these personalities risked their lives to secure our Capitol and our Country, using the identical extraordinary selflessness and soul of support seen on January 6. On behalf of the full House, we are profoundly thankful.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated he’s”heartbroken” to get Officer Evans and for his loved ones, including:”We’re in their debt.”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) wrote on Twitter which”we are horrified by this tragic & cowardly attack on U.S. Capitol police officers.”
“We are heartbroken to their loved ones, loved ones & the entire force,” he continued. “May God bless them at this time of unbearable grief & shield them in the times beforehand.”

“One of our US Capitol Police officers has passed away protecting our democracy,” she said. “I am maintaining their loved ones, loved ones, and the entire Capitol Police force in my prayers.”
“Please join me in prayer to both Capitol Police officers and their families,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) wrote on Twitter. “They responded quickly and as did all the other first responders at the scene. The entire nation is pulling them at the moment.”

“Our hearts and prayers are with the officer’s family and friends, in addition to another officer injured in the attack,” Brown added.
“With this Good Friday, let’s all pray for the surviving officer, comfort for Officer Evans’s household, and for most of the officers and all those United States Capitol Police.”
“I am heartbroken to find out that one of the U.S. Capitol Police officers included with the present episode was murdered in the line of responsibility,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) stated in an announcement. “The officer’s family would be in my thoughts, and that I pray for the wellbeing and well-being of another officer injured. They along with their fellow officers displayed great courage and professionalism in shielding the Capitol and people inside, quickly taking control of the problem and neutralizing the dangers.
