The Greek storyteller Aesop was a little too on the nose if he wrote in his set of morality tales,”Take care what you wish for, lest it come true.” Exhibit A: On March 25, Florida congressman Matt Gaetz tweeted if he were to endure a public scandal, then he would need the controversy to be called”Gaetzgate. “Five days later, the New York Times reported Gaetz is a subject of a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation for an alleged sexual affair with a 17-year-old woman a couple of years ago in which he may have compensated for her to talk to him a possible violation of national sex trafficking legislation. He says that he and his father have been working in an FBI analysis from a former DOJ officer who supposedly has been extorting Gaetz for $25 million in exchange for producing the sexual misconduct investigation disappear. (The prior official denies the claim.) Whatever is actually happening here, this is not the first time Gaetz has courted scandal and awarded his office a terrible title. He’s become a cartoonish right-wing demagogue, and until now he always appeared to bask in the attention. This New Times looks back to some of their congressman’s prior scandals, all worthy of the Gaetzgate label.

Gaetz perpetuated the election-fraud lie. Gaetz is definitely one of former president Donald Trump’s most enthusiastic supporters. He repeatedly parroted Trump’s claims of voter fraud and falsely said that there was proof of fraud at the 2020 presidential election.In January, Gaetz became one of 122 House Republicans who voted to decertify that the Electoral College votes at Arizona, a country Joe Biden acquired by about 10,500 votes.

Adhering to a debate about racism and police reform, Gaetz declared he’s a Cuban son called Nestor. Gaetz isn’t a stranger to expressing political stunts. When he declared last year he has an immigrant son, some people felt Gaetz was utilizing the adolescent because of political prop.When that the House Judiciary Committee proposed changes to a national police-reform bill each summer, Gaetz lashed out at Democratic Rep. Cedric Richmond of Louisiana during a heated argument about race and whether white Republicans may comprehend that the experience of Black Americans and, in particular, Black guys. “You are all white guys,” Richmond advised lawmakers. “You have never lived in my sneakers, and you don’t know what it’s like to become an African American man. “To that, Gaetz responded,”Are you indicating that you’re sure that not one of us have nonwhite kids? As you reflect in your Dark son, and you said none of us may know. “After that day, the congressman realised he’s a son called Nestor who came from Cuba (“lawfully, of course”) and had been residing with Gaetz at Florida. Gaetz clarified he and Nestor are not biological relatives and he’s not embraced the adolescent. Nestor reportedly came into Gaetz’s care while the congressman had been dating the teen’s older sister.Somehow, Gaetz thought that unveiling an immigrant son would give him more credibility in the argument. However, to Richmond’s point, Gaetz still doesn’t know what it’s like to become a Black man in the us. Gaetz repeatedly resisted the dangers of COVID-19. The congressman showed his bum in March if he wore a gas mask on the House floor during a vote to get a coronavirus support bundle. After one of his constituents died of the virus, the congressman defended his use of the mask and said he was really serious about protecting himself and the others. That assertion doesn’t just hold up if you look back at photos of Gaetz in maskless superspreader events and keep in mind that he once propagated a conspiracy theory on national tv that murdered a research company’s grant to come up with a cure for the coronavirus. Florida state Rep. Chris Latvala accused the congressman of inventing a gender game although he served in the Florida Legislature. In 2013, Politico reporter Marc Caputo tweeted a source had informed him that”youthful man FL Reps” needed a gender competition that involved a point system. As demonstrated by a Sun-Sentinel article from this past year, the gender game was still being played during the 2014 and 2015 legislative sessions, when Gaetz was a country representative. Present Florida Rep. Chris Latvala tweeted on January 13, 2020, which Gaetz had been the game’s founder.
